A friend is selling a fully built example for a stupid price, and now that I have a house (separate houselopnik post to come) to store toys I am inclined...

To answer some basic questions: Its on corn, running a stand alone ecu, bigass Borg Warner turbo (forgot which exactly), AWD, built transmission, 50/50 center diff.

The bad: Its been sitting for a year, will need the fueling addressed cause corn doesn’t like to chill. Will need a brake overhaul, & the suspension should be improved.

Additional info: It was band from the strip for compliance reasons, too fast, to make it back it would need a cage, battery relocation, cut-off switch, and a chute.

So how does OPPO feel about flip light AWD turbo power?

It sounds like what you’re asking is how does OPPO feel about DSM race cars. This car sounds pretty serious and doesn’t seem like a good candidate for a fun street car. It sounds like a good candidate for a stupid-fast drag car. Is that what you want? Either way, I think they’re awesome cars.

My buddy did NOT like his (stock) one because it was always in the shop for one problem or another. It wasn’t very dependable... in Minnesota.

In other words, go for it! Even the first gens have a 4G63 right? BOOOOOOOOST!!

I would look for something more streatable. If it needs all those mods to race it’s running sub 10's which is stupid fast and probably a hand full off the track.

The only realistic scene in the first Fast & Furious is when the DSM breaks in the first race.

When you say 50/50 diff, do you mean it’s a locked center diff? Seems like it’s been built as a drag car but doesn’t actually work as a drag car.

The center diff gets welded, so that the F/R split is 50/50. Did a search and thats what go on it.

Yea I was told It made a cool 500ishwhp at 25psi. I probably go back to 93, corn is great, but the gas mileage is horrible.

Yup! Its set to boost 25psi, and it can take more.

Yup! Its set to boost 25psi, and it can take more.

We had a couple of guys come out to our motor club dyno day with one set to 30 psi, running pump gas with the help of methanol injection. I was worried we were going to watch an engine detonate on the dyno, but it took it like a champ— something like 360 hp at the wheels.

Ok, so welded diff and overall a drag-biased setup but not actually legal for drag racing.

In its current form the car’s not very useful.

You could either finish prepping it into a drag racer, or take it as is and get it more geared towards fun street/track driving by doing some kind of center LSD (Quaife & Wavetrac have options) and sorting out the suspension and brakes.

But it sounds like the big laggy turbo is more suited to a drag application, if that interests you.

I’m not opposed to buying someone else’s project but that’s only if I like the direction they’ve gone with it and it’s something I want to continue, this one feels like a lot more work and maybe not the way I’d want to go as I don’t give a shit about drag racing.

BAHAHA! Thats a good one.

A good friend of mine once told me “woman hate it when you’re having fun without them.”

The deeper I get in this relationship the truer I feel this is, so I make everything sound like hard work, it cant be fun if it’s work.

Suspension and brakes are easy on these, like maybe a weekend job if you’ve got all the tools. Fueling is a bit more expensive but shouldn’t take more than a weekend either if you know what needs to be done. These are easy to work on and parts are cheap, but there’s a reason you see fully built examples going for cheap. They aren’t known for reliability and of course when you’ve added more boost... there are going to be some break downs. As a bonus the first gens are pretty much better than the second gen in all aspects.

HOWEVER! I’ve owned mine for 7 years. Guess how long it’s been on the road? I think I’ve driven it a total of 10 minutes, and even then a wheel fell off. Those were 10 glorious minutes though, these things are quick (and I’ve only got FWD). The rest of that time was college and now home ownership so it’s not entirely the cars part. I rebuilt the car, got it running, and then bought a house. It’s been sitting at my parents since.

I’d say do it if you already have a decent parts list (standard project car advice always applies: double what you think you’ll spend) of what needs to be done and are comfortable with spending that much and doing the work. Don’t wipe out whatever safety fund you have on this car, it’s the kind of car that will break down on the test drive while you’re trying to sell it.
